Playcentres are now eligible for 20 Hours ECE
20 Hours ECE is a government funding policy designed to help reduce cost barriers so more children can benefit from quality early childhood education (ECE).
From 1 July 2010 licensed Playcentres are able to offer 20 Hours ECE; and all three-, four-, and five-year-old children are eligible to receive it. NZPF recommends that Playcentres begin offering 20 Hours ECE at the start of Term three.
20 Hours ECE is not based on how much parents earn, their residency status or whether they work outside the home.
Each Playcentre will decide whether to offer 20 Hours ECE in their centre.
All eligible children can get up to 20 hours a week of ECE for which fees cannot be charged. Some of a child's 20 hours can be accessed at Playcentre and some at another service if families wish, for example, a home-based care service.
20 Hours ECE starts when a child turns three and finishes when they enrol at school.
