Boosting Numbers
Our local playcentre is on the verge of closing down due to apparent lack of community interest. Has anyone out there got any ideas on how to boost numbers and increase community support?

Our centre has been in the same position. It was important for us to keep sessions open so families had the oppurtunites to attend. Your centre must own the process, brain storm amoung the people at your centre who are keeping it running. It took us about a year to turn our centre around. Some community awareness PR we did was pamphlet drop, new signage, float in parade, centre t-shirts, getting our name out and about. At centre we changed some of our welcoming processes and infomation talks and found that our families have a high level of commitment. Our assn also put out a PR resourse Do you have a PR officer at your assn to help?

re: Boosting Numbers
Thanks for the suggestions! I am really new to playcentre, so I don't know what resources we have available. The SOuthland Assn has been very helpful so far. It doesn't make it easier that I have no idea what a fully funtioning playcentre looks like.
I guess its all a great learning experience :-)
So far I have spoken with the local Plunket Nurse who has agreed to put info in the New Mums Pack that she hands out and the nurse in the local Drs office is happy to give out stickers to the under fives who come to see her.
The local community seems to be somewhat apathetic as regards their kids. But I am new to the area so that just be due to the fact that I don't know many people.

re: Boosting Numbers
Have thought of some other things we have tried. We hold an open day in term one each year. We advertise on the free community notice board on the radio and do a huge pamphlet drop for this. I was going to say we approached plunket and Dr's also. we also have done displays in the local library. We send articles into local papers with photos of whAT WE HAVE BEING DOIng at centre, and to the Playcentre jornal. Our Playcentre branded calanders and jornals are an excellent resourse to give out to community places where they will be displayed. Besides the PR things we also took a hard look at our centre 'is it appealing', what are peoples first impression? are we following our philosphy? are new families aware of how Playcentre runs, when and how do they find out? The more we encouraged people into education the better our seesions run, the more people wanted to do..good luck, I hope you have good support from within your centre/assn, and you never know what the next family through your Playcentre doors will offer.
