| Invest time playing with your children this term | | 16th Apr 2012 | Having a young child is a serious job but should not be all work. A New Zealand community education icon gives parents the chance to play again with other like-minded families.
Playcentres re-open for term two on Monday 23 April, and many have places available for new enrolments.
“Time spent playing with and learning alongside your child is a huge investment in the future” said Playcentre Federation Co-president Maureen Woodhams. “Playcentre provides a community network to give parents support, plus free parent education to help parents develop the knowledge and skills they'll need. We believe in putting our resources into building families, who in turn strengthen their communities.”
Last month, Playcentres all round the country celebrated the benefits they've found from investing time in parent-led education while their children are young. Activities included open days, art shows, and giant combined play sessions in the park.
“Parenting is the most important job any person will do in their life” said Playcentre Federation Co-president Marion Pilkington. “Parenting is learned and learning takes time together – especially time when you and your child are not tired or stressed. Attending Playcentre makes time for families to play and learn together, and we invite other families to come along and experience that learning.”
Playcentre operates 489 early childhood education centres around the country for children aged from birth to school entry. Playcentres are run as parent cooperatives, where groups of parents collectively supervise and teach the children attending in half-day sessions. Parents are offered free NZQA recognised training in child development, positive discipline, communication, and management skills to help them in this.
Playcentre Awareness Week is celebrated once every two years to promote the value of parent-led early education and community involvement. This year it was focused on the huge dividends that spending time learning together and being involved in the community brings for children and parents alike.
