10.2 What are Hazardous Substances?

The following substances are naturally occurring that are considered hazardous:

Mould – mould should be removed immediately when it appears so is not a contaminate that needs to be notified to contractors and therefore is not part of the HMMP. It is prudent if testing and reporting has been done to retain the information in this folder for information.

Plants – certain plants (including sometimes roots, leaves and seeds) are considered a hazardous substance. Playcentre Aotearoa has a list of plants and a poster that are not suitable for use in a Playcentre environment.

Timber treatments – certain timbers are treated with chemical products to make them last or stop them being destroyed by insects.

Cleaning products – a lot of cleaning products that are used have hazardous substances in them.
