Message from the Secretary for Education
Ngā mihi o te Rāhina,
You will have heard the Government’s decision New Zealand beyond the northern and southern boundaries of Auckland moving to Alert Level 2 commencing from 11:59pm Tuesday 7 September. Auckland, will remain in Alert Level 4 until at least 11:59pm Tuesday 14 September.
As we do, we are working with the Ministry of Health to turn the new Health Order into guidance and will send this out as soon as we’re able – I had hoped to be in a position to send this tonight however at this stage this will be tomorrow morning. We are not expecting large scale change to the settings.
For those of you moving into Alert Level 2, you are able to take the next 48 hours to prepare for your service to reopen on Thursday 9 September. If you haven’t been open at Alert Level 3, cleaners and staff can go onsite from tomorrow in order to prepare for welcoming children back.
To all of you in Auckland, I know that the decision to stay in Level 4 will not be a surprise. I also know that it brings with it many challenges.
While many people will be delighted to return to early learning, some tamariki will be apprehensive and over the next few days we will provide advice and template letters for you to share with whānau if you wish.
It is important at this time to remember that the Government makes its decisions with a health first lens and it takes its decisions very cautiously, this decision is a reflection of the success of our collective approaches to date.
