There was a strong sense of reflection and gratitude as whānau, supporters and community leaders gathered on 15 July to celebrate the opening of Heretaunga Playcentre in Hastings.
Speaking at the pre-opening celebration, Session Facilitator Jenny Epplett reflected on the end of a remarkable four-year journey for the Playcentre community, formerly known as Cornwall Park Playcentre. After being advised that its 50-year lease would not be renewed, the centre faced an uncertain future. Potential alternatives were explored, but plans did not eventuate, leaving the Playcentre without a permanent home.
What followed was a testament to the resilience of Playcentre whānau. Sessions were held wherever space could be found, from local parks and the Scout Hall to a temporary home at Haumoana Playcentre. When Cyclone Gabrielle flooded Haumoana’s iconic John Scott-designed building, the community once again adapted, moving to Havelock North Playcentre while repairs were completed. Despite the challenges, the dream of a permanent new Playcentre never disappeared.
That dream became reality when Hastings District Council provided a site at St Leonards Park and construction of the new Playcentre finally got underway.
The celebration was also an opportunity to acknowledge the many people who helped make the new centre possible, including community leaders and representatives from Waipatu Marae. Special thanks were extended to Erena and Nanny Bub, who gifted the name Heretaunga to the Playcentre, recognising its connection to the region and community.
With a new purpose-built home and a license from ERO, Heretaunga Playcentre is ready to welcome new whānau, create new memories, and continue the legacy of those who paved the way.
As Jenny reflected, the future is bright, built on the resilience of those who stayed the course, the contributions of those who came before, and the many tamariki and whānau who are yet to walk through the doors of Heretaunga Playcentre.
Whānau can visit the new centre at 930 Southampton Street West, St Leonards, Hastings or contact the centre on heretaunga@playcentre.org.nz.
