Overview
Playcentre is a licensed early childhood education service for children from birth to school age, where tamariki and whānau learn, play, and grow together. Guided by Te Whāriki, Aotearoa’s bicultural early childhood curriculum, Playcentre supports children to learn through self-directed play, fostering creativity, confidence, communication skills, and positive relationships.
At the heart of the Playcentre experience is active whānau involvement. Families benefit from meaningful participation in their child’s learning, mixed-age play opportunities, strong community connections, and access to free NZQA-accredited adult education programmes for parents and caregivers.
Session types vary between centres and may include mixed-age sessions, big kids/tamariki nui sessions, outdoor sessions, te reo Māori sessions, and infant programmes, providing flexible options to suit the needs and interests of tamariki and their whānau.
What Will My Child Learn
Playcentre’s learning environment is guided by Te Whāriki, Aotearoa’s bicultural early childhood curriculum. Each centre offers a range of play areas that respond to children’s interests, ages, and abilities, supporting tamariki to explore, imagine, and grow through play. With a strong focus on relationships, creativity, and community, Playcentre nurtures confident learners in spaces where whānau are actively involved throughout the learning journey.
Session Types at Playcentre
Session types vary across centres, reflecting the needs and strengths of their communities. These may include general mixed‑age sessions, big kids / tamariki nui sessions, outdoor sessions, te reo Māori sessions and infant/ under 2 sessions offering families a range of ways to engage that best suit their tamariki and whānau. Whichever type of session you attend, be sure to bring a change of clothes!
General Mixed Age Sessions
Mixed aged sessions for tamariki aged 0-6 years and their whānau. These sessions are fun for the whole family and offer opportunities for tamariki and their whānau to make friendships that last a lifetime. Playcentre endorses mixed age play and encourage tuākana–tēina relationships, as it allows children to engage and guide others, older and younger than themselves and become part of, and contribute to, society as a whole. Older children learn how to communicate, teach, share and negotiate with empathy for their younger peers while younger children are stimulated by playing alongside, learning from and observing older peers.
Big Kids / Tamariki Nui sessions
Supervised sessions for children aged 2.5 years and older. These can be run either by volunteers, or paid staff and provide an opportunity for older children to be challenged in a supported and familiar environment, and build on their social competencies as well as a chance for busy parents to have their child cared for by familiar faces.
Outdoor sessions
In these sessions we bring our tamariki closer to nature by hosting sessions at a range of local spaces. These sessions incorporate Papatūānuku into our play and foster a deeper connection to local spaces such as parks, forests, beaches, maunga and rivers, while maintaining the high ratios and sense of belonging fostered at our Playcentres.
Te reo Māori sessions
Become more comfortable and confident in using te reo Māori by attending one of our bilingual sessions. In these sessions you and your child will be supported to korero Māori and gain a deeper understanding of Te Ao Māori through play, waiata and friendship.
Infant programmes
Playcentres welcome children from age 0-6, and infants are welcome to attend most Playcentre sessions and participate in the regular activities. However, we also offer more specialised infant programmes where there is a real focus on the needs of newborns to 1 year olds, as well as the support and friendship of other new parents.

Be involved in your child’s learning
At the heart of the Playcentre experience is active whānau involvement. Our unique approach places families at the heart of early learning, recognising parents as the first and best educators for their tamariki. Parents, grandparents, and caregivers attend alongside children, sharing in their discoveries, supporting their learning, development, and building strong relationships through play.
Learning through play
Children learn through self-directed, free play and meaningful interactions with trusted adults and peers, developing curiosity, creativity, confidence, problem-solving skills, positive relationships, empathy, and a strong sense of belonging. Mixed-age sessions support tuakana-teina learning, where younger and older tamariki learn from and support one another.
Free adult education
Playcentre offers free NZQA-accredited adult education programmes, giving parents and caregivers the opportunity to learn more about child development, strengthen their parenting skills, and grow in confidence.
Community and support
Playcentre is more than an early learning service. It is a supportive community where families build friendships, share experiences, and support one another through the joys and challenges of parenting.
No set fees
We believe every child deserves access to quality early childhood education, free from financial barriers. That’s why there are no set fees to attend. Playcentre is partially funded by the New Zealand Ministry of Education. As a registered charity, we also rely on regular donations from parents and whānau to keep providing rich, hands-on learning experiences for our tamariki.
Three free visits
The best way to understand what makes Playcentre different is to come and experience it for yourself. Every Playcentre reflects the community it serves, with its own culture and character. We offer three free visits before you join and encourage families to visit local centres and discover the Playcentre that feels right for their whānau.
