Celebrating 85 Years of Playcentre!

85 Years of Community and Connection

Born in wartime Aotearoa in 1941, Playcentre emerged as a uniquely New Zealand response to the pressures facing young families. Founded by visionary women who believed parents grow alongside their tamariki, our movement was designed as a community-owned, volunteer-powered model of early learning and whānau support.

More than an early childhood service, Playcentre has long been a creator of confidence, capability, and connection, a role that remains deeply relevant in today’s increasingly complex life.

“Playcentre has always believed that when whānau are supported, tamariki and communities thrive. For 85 years, that belief has quietly shaped Aotearoa. This is the year we say it out loud.”
