Funding for Playcentres

Top Tip for December

** With more and more competition for grants, funders are looking to finance needs, not nice-to-haves, so it is important to explain why this item/project/programme is essential for your organisation and why your organisation is essential in your community.

How will the funding of this application help you meet a genuine need in your community? If it is a real and urgent need, explain what has happened in your community to make it so. How has your community or organisation changed? How have any recent government decisions or Covid affected your organisation or the community it serves? Why is this project or item a need in your community now, when it may not have been 12 months ago?

One way to demonstrate need is to consider what the impact would be if your organisation didn’t exist. However, be careful how you express this kind of thinking as sometimes it can appear desperate and sensational. It is more effective to focus on your strengths and the positive difference your organisation makes. **

Upcoming Funding Rounds
** Please note: Always check-in with individual funders BEFORE YOU APPLY. While every effort has been made to ensure information given is correct at the time of publication, funding availability and other details may change frequently. **

Some funds are on hold during the COVID-19 lockdown and funds currently open may be subject to change. Many of these are venues that rely on pokie machines for their funds. However, most community foundations are still operating as their funds come from investments, so these may be options to look at along with Rotary and your local Lions (different to the Lion Foundation).

With the summer holidays fast approaching, I have listed some funds that open in late Jan/early Feb to give you time to prepare your applications before the summer break.

Sargood Bequest – National – closes 31 Dec

www.sargoodbequest.org.nz

Makes grants to projects and activities in the Children & Youth, Cultural, Sports & Outdoors, Educational and Environmental categories with a focus on Access, Participation and Inspiration. Majority of grants are under $5,000. Trustees favour projects where funds are specifically targeted. Grants paid in May.

Auckland Council Board Local Grants – Auckland Council area – opens mid Jan/early Feb depending on the Board

https://www.aucklandcouncil.govt.nz/grants-community-support-housing/grants/local-board-grants/Pages/default.aspx

These grants tend to be for higher value grants (over $2,000) than the Quick Response Grants and are available once or twice a year. Each Board has their own outcomes and priorities.

Hamilton City Council Single Year Community Grants (up to $10,000) – Hamilton City boundary – opens 1 Feb, closes 1 March

https://www.hamilton.govt.nz/our-city/community-development/useful-info/communityfunding/Pages/Single-Year-Community-Grant.aspx

Operating and admin costs; programme development and implementation; community events and cultural festivals; equipment and resources that support the project or organisation. They support small not-for-profit community organisations that deliver services, programmes and activities that benefit the social, cultural, arts and environmental wellbeing of communities in Hamilton. Contestable fund of over $400k for events and projects taking place from June 2022 to January 2023. Max grant $10,000. In assessing grant applications, the panel gives priority to the number of volunteer hours and in-kind donations contributed to an organisation or the project. Results in April.

Nikau Foundation – Wellington Centres – opens mid Feb, closes 15 March

Will fund salaries (including salary support for additional specialised staff resources), capital expenditure, operating costs, capability building costs, program costs and travel. Porirua area can apply for up to $30,000. Elsewhere usually fund between $3,000-5,000.

Shout Out

If you have a ‘Shout Out’ you would like featured as a thank you to a funder who has supported your Centre, please email Tonya on [email protected]

As your Grants Administrator, I am passionate about supporting centres with their grant funding applications. Some of the areas I can help with are to provide an affiliation letter or Spotlight (finance) report, point you in the direction of who might be suitable to apply to, help you with some benefits and outcomes or be there for struggling centres that need a lot of help with their application. You can email me on [email protected]. In order to support as many centres as possible and ensure quality applications, any new grant applications need to be sent to me for review at least one week before the closing date.

You can find lots of information to assist you with your funding applications on the Grants section of the Playcentre website (you need to first be logged in as a member) – https://www.playcentre.org.nz/member/finance/grants-kit-and-supporting-documents/

I would like to wish you all a very merry Christmas and hope that you get to spend some valuable time with your children and families over the summer holidays. Take the time to rest and recharge ready for all that 2022 will bring.

Playcentres can sign up for a Tonic Magazine subscription. The usual cost for one organisation is $99 and includes:

  • 4 x issues (February, May, August and November)
  • 48 Issues of Tonic Club email newsletter
  • 10% discount of any workshops (for anyone in the organisation)
  • Free funding wallplanner in the November issue

If a few centres would like to subscribe they can offer a bulk discount:

  • 2-5 centres subscribing: $84.10 per subscription (15% discount)
  • 6-9 centres subscribing: $79.20 per sub (20% discount)
  • 10+ centres subscribing: $69.30 per sub (30% discount)

They normally only offer these rates if they can ship the magazines in bulk to one address, but for Playcentre, they’re happy to offer the bulk rates and send the magazines out to each individual centre who subscribes. You can request a free copy of the magazine to see what is included by emailing [email protected].

Ecostore continue to honour the special arrangement with Playcentre whereby they make their products available to Playcentre at wholesale.

The wholesale rates especially for bulk sizes are a lot cheaper than the regular retail prices for Ecostore products so Centres are guaranteed a good deal.

Ecostore usually require an order minimum of $200 for wholesale orders and charge freight to deliver the products to wholesale customers.

Under their special Playcentre offer, the minimum order amount is reduced to $75 (very achievable) and they deliver the products to the Centre freight free nationwide.

Please note that they do require orders in full carton quantities if Centres are ordering our retail size products. This means you can’t just order one bottle of hand wash 425ml for example, but will have to take a whole box of 3 bottles.

This does NOT apply to the commercial 5L and 20L sizes which can be ordered as individual bottles.

To place a wholesale order centres will need to email their customer service team directly ([email protected]) – an online portal is being developed.

To become a wholesale customer of Ecostore, all the Centre has to do is contact our customer service team ([email protected]), complete the account application and then ensure that your order volume meets the $75 per order threshold. EASY!

Discounted rates for their reusable cups are available for Playcentres at $8.50 + GST per cup. In order to receive the discount, email Fiona McAllister (Office Manager) at [email protected].

To access discounts for products being used at your Playcentre, take a letter from your Playcentre explaining the paint project/expected paint/product needed (approximate is fine) into your local Resene owned ColorShop and ask for the EC41 Playcentre discount. The discount depends on the products you buy – your local Resene owned ColourShop will talk you through options.  E.g. for some, if you don’t care about the colour, you could look at mistints.
