Ngā hui ā-whare 2022
Playcentre Aotearoa’s first Ngā hui ā-whare was held on 17-19 June, where both Te Whare Tikanga Māori and Tāngata Tiriti representatives came together in one space to meet with the Trustee Board. This was the first chance we’ve had to meet kanohi ki te kanohi (face-to-face) since 2019 and the positive energy shared was simply spectacular.

Huge thanks to the representatives who found the time and capacity in their busy lives to digest hundreds of pages of documents, visit centres and organise cluster and regional meetings to ensure centre and whānau Māori voice could be authentically represented, and to fully participate in what was an incredibly intense 48 hours of mahi. And boy did we make the most of the time! New ideas, compromises, questions, answers, laughs. There was some time spent presenting information about Ki te pae tawhiti, discussing the Draft Trust Deed, as well as some whare-specific discussions and decisions.

Hui Decisions

Te Whare Tikanga Māori:
Previous Minutes – May 2019, November 2019 and November 2020 – approved
Te Tātai Tauatanga o Te Whare Tikanga Māori (Succession Plan) – not agreed
Rōpū voting process – not agreed
Whilst these papers were not agreed to, the kōrero held around these topics was insightful. There is still more mahi we need to do, some of it very soon and Te Whare Tikanga Māori Trustees will be in touch regarding this.

Tangata Tiriti:
Previous Minutes – November 2020 – approved
Selection of Tāngata Tiriti Trustee – congratulations to Fran Cowie from Lincoln Playcentre in Canterbury who was selected as Tāngata Tiriti Trustee elect, for endorsement at AGM in November 2022.

Ki te pae tawhiti: More Information
At Ngā hui ā-whare we shared more information regarding what happens if the Draft Trust Deed doesn’t pass, and what it will mean for a centre to be independent.

We have created a short (6min) “Ki te pae tawhiti video: Vote 1 and Vote 2“ that outlines the key points on both these topics. To support this, we have also created a more detailed document titled ”More Information – Votes 1 and 2“. The Representatives present also requested the summary presentation – “The journey so far” we gave at hui be made available as a short, high-level overview.

Ki te pae tawhiti: Q&A session – Vote 1 and Vote 2
To provide further opportunities for centres and rōpū to ask questions we will be holding our next Q&A session on Wednesday 6 July.

Topic: Vote 1 and Vote 2
Wednesday 6th July, 1pm-2.30pm.
Join meeting via Zoom
Meeting ID: 840 7050 8477

On reflection, we have decided to reschedule the Q&A sessions we had planned during the school holidays (11th July and 20th July) to ensure centre members can participate. New dates will be advised at the start of Term 3.

Ki te pae tawhiti: Next steps
The board is now pulling together all the feedback and input received at hui and working to update the draft Trust Deed and Ki te pae tawhiti overall.   We are partnering with Community Think to ensure that centres and rōpū Māori have the information they need to participate in the voting process.  Further information and opportunities to engage are being developed and centres will be notified of these at the start of Term 3.

Have a wonderful winter break, wherever you are in this beautiful country we call home.

Ngā mihi nui,

Ann, Avis, Bes, Gemma, Hayley, Heather, Michelle, Ranee
