Changes coming to the Playcentre Primary Teacher Bridging Award

If you are a primary teacher working on Playcentre Education, keep an eye out for communication about upcoming changes to our Primary Teacher Bridging Award!

We have reviewed the content based on feedback from learners who have completed the Bridging Award and then gone on to complete the full Level 4 Certificate and have heard how valuable they find the in-depth exploration of Te Whāriki, assessment, evaluation and planning in PL3 Manaakitanga – Enriching Children’s Learning.

From 2026, PL3 will replace PL2 Pūkengatanga – Theory Guides Practice and the Playcentre Primary Teacher Bridging Award will include:

  • PE1 Ūkaipōtanga – Let’s Play
  • PL3 Manaakitanga – Enriching Children’s Learning
  • PL4 Kaitiakitanga – Playcentre and the Regulations

The pre-requisite to complete PL2 prior to starting PL3 will be waived for primary teachers, and we will have a transition period in place. Any teachers who have started PL2 prior to the end of 2025 will be awarded the bridging award by completing PE1, PL2 and PL4 if they complete PL2 prior to the start of Term 2 2026 (20 April 2026). Primary teachers can still complete PL2 if they’d like and would be required to do so if they intend to complete the full NZ Certificate in Early Childhood Education and Care (Level 4).
