Risk and Resilience: Appointment of Deputy Co-Chairs

Over the past month our community resilience has continued to be tested across the motu, with Cyclone Gabrielle smashing through, earthquakes rattling and slips becoming all too regular. Arohanui to all our Playcentre whānau who have been affected.

Pia from Havelock North Playcentre shared this whakaaro, “Everyone is mucking in together. Families sharing childcare while parents help out others. Baking and meals turning up for those in need. Donations bundled together and delivered. Money fundraised. Strong hands doing the heavy lifting of furniture and trees cleared. All those things Playcentre whānau do every week, but the trauma and the vast need will take its toll.”

We know that our Playcentre kaupapa provides a solid foundation for resilient communities, but uncertainty and risk require ongoing reflection on how we run our centres and organisation to ensure that families can indeed grow together day in, day out. At the board level we have been reminded that none of us are immune to the impacts of severe weather and therefore we have made the decision to appoint Deputy Co-Chairs to ensure our governance mahi will not be negatively impacted by unexpected events.  We are pleased to announce Heather Ruru has accepted the position of Deputy Co-Chair for Te Whare Tikanga Māori alongside Hayley Kirk-Smith for Tangata Tiriti. Ka rawe Heather and Hayley, thank you for your continued mahi as leaders in our organisation.

Special General Meeting (SGM) and Strategic Plan Review

As you may have noted in our 28 February announcement, the SGM previously scheduled for 1 April 2023 is no longer required. We hope this lessens the burden on our centres, Rōpū, and Representatives, particularly those attending to weather related damage in their communities.

However, our mahi towards a sustainable future for Playcentre Aotearoa continues, and we are excited to kick off a review of our Strategic Plan this year.  Keep an eye out for more information coming soon on how you can get involved with this exciting mahi, all about looking ahead and setting aspirations for the future of Te Whānau Tupu Ngātahi o Aotearoa.

Please get in touch on [email protected] if you’d like to know more about the Representative role or other leadership opportunities within Playcentre Aotearoa, we’d love to hear from you.
