Fostering education in te reo Māori 

Te Ahu o te Reo Māori means the future pathway of te reo Māori – a pathway that seeks to inspire and aspire for improved te reo Māori proficiency, acquisition and use across the education sector.  

It also provides opportunities for te reo Māori to be normalised,  and Māori identity and culture, to be shared and embraced. 

Te Ahu o te Reo Māori aims to grow and strengthen an education workforce that can integrate te reo Māori into the learning of all ākonga in Aotearoa.

Te Ahu o te Reo Māori is now available across all 10 Ministry of Education regions including:  

Tai Tokerau, Auckland, Waikato, Bay of Plenty/ Waiariki, Taranaki/ Manawatu/ Whanganui, Hawke’s Bay/ Tairāwhiti, Wellington, Nelson/ Marlborough/ West Coast, Canterbury/ Chatham Islands and Otago/ Southland. 

Mā wai tēnei kaupapa? | Can I participate? 

Te Ahu o te Reo Māori has been designed for the education workforce that engages with and contributes to the learning of all ākonga and students.  In order to progress towards our goals, we are targeting participation from these groups: 

  • English medium teachers from early learning services through to secondary school 
  • Māori medium kaiako, from Kōhanga Reo through to wharekura 
  • Non-teaching and support staff in kura, schools, wharekura, early learning services and Kōhanga Reo 

 Groups not eligible to participate include: 

  • teachers in the tertiary sector 
  • third-party contractors employed in the sector 
  • those in teacher training 
  • parents’ home schooling children 
  • teachers who are currently on maternity or study leave. 

 Ka ako au i te aha? | What will I learn? 

Te Ahu o te Reo Māori is based on a seven level te reo Māori competency framework called Ngā Taumata o Te Ahu o te Reo Māori.

 The five focus areas include: 

  • Local dialect – local words, phrases, karakia, waiata and sayings 
  • Use – Practise of reo use appropriate for a classroom setting 
  • Grammar – foundations of grammar and writing conventions 
  • Curriculum – development of learning content for regular activity 
  • Revitalisation – language planning for the school/ early learning services/ classroom 

 Ka pēhea taku akoako? | How will I learn? 

Your commitment to learning te reo Māori will mean you will participate in learning for up to 120 hours over 12-14 weeks.  

The learning will be delivered in a variety of ways including, but not exclusive to, weekly classes, on-line lessons, tutorials and noho marae (overnight stay/ learning experiences).  

To support you to feel comfortable and confident to use what you have learnt in your classrooms you will also participate in an 8 week post-delivery course to help embed and enhance teaching and learning activities.   

He aha ngā hua ka puta ki a au? | What will I achieve? 

Participants who successfully complete Te Ahu o te Reo Māori will be able to: 

  • use the knowledge and skills gained in their teaching programmes and enhance their relationships with ākonga, parents and whānau
  • have improved understanding of the communities they are a part of, especially the stories, language features and dialects unique to the region 
  • nurture opportunities for all staff and ākonga to use te reo Māori every day. 

He aha ngā utu? | What are the costs? 

There are no attendance or registration fees and all learning materials will be provided but you may incur some travel costs.  

Me pēhea taku rēhita? | How do I register? 

To register, you’ll need an Education Sector Logon (ESL) and access to the application called Whiria: Te Ahu o te Reo Māori. Your Regional Support Lead may be the SPCP who can complete this part of the application for you.

Helpful tips on how to register 

Step 1:   Apply for an Education Sector Logon (ESL)   

An ESL account enables you to access your regional online learning community of Te Ahu o te Reo Māori when delivery begins  Find out about setting up an ESL and accessing the application 

 You will need to complete and return the ESL 38 form.  

(See an example form attached- refer to the highlighted sections in particular) 

  • Complete Section 1 and Section 2. 
  • To complete Section 3, provide your evidence of identityto your service provider contact to sign.  

Information to help Playcentre whānau and staff in completing Section 3: 

Your ECE Service Provider contact will verify your two forms of identity, and sign your ESL 38 form 

Your ECE Service Provider is the same person that is responsible for your MOE License 

For Playcentre staff – please select a centre that you are connected to, and provide their MOE license number in the “Organisation/Service ID” section of the ESL 38 form 

If you need to clarify who is your ECE Service Provider contact, please call the MOE ESL helpdesk  Ph 0800 422 599 x4, or email [email protected]  

Provide them with your MOE license number, or centre name and address, and they will give you the name of your ECE Service Provider contact who can verify your two forms of ID, and sign your ESL 38 form. 

 Information for ECE Service Provider contact in verifying Evidence of identity: 

The ECE Service Provider contact is able to verify the two forms of ID by receiving scanned copies of the ID via email, along with the applicants completed ESL 38 form.   

The ECE Service Provider contact needs to sign Part 3 of the ESL 38 form, then return the completed form via email to the applicant 

  • Return your completed form to the Education Service Desk at the Ministry of Education. This detail is on page 2 of the form. 

(The MOE ESL help desk suggested it would be helpful to receive a copy of the ID along with the ESL 38 form, in order to ensure that the applicants name is spelt correctly)   

Step 2:  The Ministry of Education will process your ESL 38 form and give you access to the application Whiria: Te Ahu o te Reo Māori. 

  • Please allow 1 – 3 working days. 

 Step 3: If you are a new ESL user, you will need to set up your user account

  • Once Education service Desk has processed your ESL38 form invitation, you will be sent an email – make sure the invitation is for you. 
  • If it is, click on the link in the email to set up your ESL user account. 
  • Find out more information about setting up your user account. 
  • Make sure that you complete the registration for Te Ahu o te Reo Māori within 14 days.
