Northland Playcentres Ride the Rails in Kawakawa

Over 60 Playcentre tamariki and their whānau came together on Monday, 19th May, for a joyful hapori event aboard the Bay of Islands Vintage Railway in Kawakawa.

This iconic train, famous for being the only one in the world to travel down a State Highway, delighted children and adults alike as it chugged through town, waving to passing cars.

Tamariki from 12 Playcentres across Northland—from Peria to Marsden—joined the excursion, creating a vibrant and connected community atmosphere.  Centres included Peria, Pamapuria, Rawene, Ohaeawai, Waimamaku, Kohukohu, Kerikeri, Kawakawa, Hukerenui, Hora Hora, Parua Bay, and Marsden.

The event was a celebration of connection, exploration, and shared joy—bringing together Playcentre whānau from across the region for a memorable day on the rails.
