National Volunteer Week: Nominate an amazing Playcentre volunteer

National Volunteer Week runs from 19-25 June. Our volunteers are an integral part of the Playcentre philosophy, providing invaluable support to our centres, other volunteers, tamariki and pēpi.

We want to say thank you to all our 12,330 volunteer Playcentre members for your mahi, enthusiasm and dedication to helping tamariki and families in your community learn and grow together. Everyone contributes to their Playcentre village in their own way.

Check out our ‘Nominate an amazing volunteer’ Facebook post and nominate an amazing Playcentre volunteer you know. One lucky volunteer will receive a beautiful bunch of flowers from Interflora. Nominations close at 8pm Saturday 25 June 2022.

This is a private group designed for all past and present members of Playcentre in Aotearoa to be able to support each other and share ideas. It is a great place to discuss play ideas or find out how other centres do things.

To join you will need to tell us which Playcentre you are involved with.

Remember that it is not an official communication channel for Playcentre Aotearoa, so please check out the official channels for up-to-date information, policies and procedures.

Book Review – Parenting Road Code

We have three copies of past Playcentre member Madeleine Taylor’s book, “Parenting Road Code” available to give away to Playcentre members who wish to review it. Your review would then be published in the next Playcentre Bulletin for other Playcentre members.

This new resource is very user friendly and tailored to New Zealand. You can find more information on Madeleine and the book on her website.

“Staged as a series of building blocks, the book provides tools for returning leadership to the role of parent, affirming parents’ strengths, and setting goals and firm boundaries with the end goal of establishing an environment where loving family relationships flourish.”

If you wish to review the book, then keep a copy for yourself please email: [email protected]

Awesome mahi by whānau at Island Bay Playcentre

Island Bay Playcentre is doing awesome mahi acknowledging and using the various languages of their Centre whānau. Their Centre Advisor, Barbara Hobden, was so impressed on a recent visit to see all three of our country’s official languages being used at once, as books were being read with tamariki in te reo Māori, NZ Sign Language, and English. The Centre has several deaf tamariki, and have been upskilling their membership with PLD on using sign language on session. They have also organised te reo Māori night classes for members, and it is fabulous to hear te reo being used with tamariki in their tākaro. The languages of other Centre members are also heard on session (e.g. Czech in the sandpit), including when reading books to groups of tamariki, e.g. ‘The Hungry Caterpillar’ in German and then Māori! What lucky tamariki being able to experience the language of their own and other cultures. He tino pai rawa ō koutou mahi, e kaiako mā!
