Measles: Vaccinations and immunisation registers

Further to our message in last month’s Bulletin, we remind you again that measles spreads easily and quickly, usually between people who are not immunised or only partially immunised. It can be serious and life threatening. In the 2019 measles outbreak in Aotearoa more than 30% of the people infected had to be admitted to hospital.

The best protection against measles is the free MMR vaccine. It will protect you and your whānau, and prevent the virus from spreading.

Whānau can talk to their family doctor, local pharmacist or Healthline about the MMR and other vaccinations. Find out about measles vaccination on the Ministry of Health website:

Our Playcentre child immunisation register is maintained by our regional teams and is provided to Regional Public Health in the event of an outbreak. This is critically important during an outbreak to reduce the risk of the disease spreading and to keep tamariki safe.

To uphold the Privacy Act 2020, centres are not to collect or hold the immunisation information of Playcentre tamariki. This is initially collected at the time of enrolment by the regional office (Regional Funding Administrators) and members should now send any updated immunisation information to their regional office.
