Tēnā koutou katoa
Tuatahi, he mihi tēnei ki a Io Mata Ngaro, nāna te ao i hanga,
āra ko Ranginui e tū iho nei, ko Papatūānuku e takoto nei,
me ā rāua tamariki nui tonu.

Greetings to all of you,
First greetings to the Supreme Being who created the world,
also to the Atua of the sky and Atua of the earth,
and their many children, greeting, greetings
Secondly, to those who have died and have become stars, farewell, farewell, farewell.
The dead to the dead and the living to the living,
Greetings to all of you from the four winds of this land,
Therefore, the greatest treasure is love towards mankind,
Once again, greetings to all of us.

I heke ngā roimata a Ranginui – the tears of Ranginui have been descending as torrential downpour, and the winds of Tāwhirimātea have been lashing against te Taiao (the environment) and all living things. So many people have suffered loss, of loved ones, of homes, possessions and livelihoods. It is at times like these that we draw together to tautoko where we can, to koha time, resources and aroha. Mā te Runga Rawa tātou e manaaki, e tiaki.

There is also a catchy waiata called Whiti Mai Te Rā – Ngā Āhua o te Rangi (The sun shines) composed by Mama Mate Taitua, who is passionate about sharing her waiata with everyone in the community of Te Awakairangi, Lower Hutt. He manu tīoriori ia! Mama Mates’ method of learning is simple, sing the same waiata every week, every month, eery term, for most of the year!

Kapa Haka in Tāmaki-Makaurau, Auckland

Ngāti Whātua ki Ōrākei was host to Te Matatini – (the many faces) over four days in late February. Known as the Olympics of fierce haka, amazing costumes, sweet harmonies, dramatic performances, history, whakapapa and whanaungatanga. Tāmaki-Makaurau – Auckland was the place to be to fill your wairua, hinengaro, and puku with all the kai on offer. The rest of us were cheering on our favourite Kapa Haka from the comfort of our couch.
