New Zealand Music Month – Waiata

Ko tēnei te marama o ngā waiata me ngā taonga pūoro o Aotearoa!

This New Zealand Music Month we will highlight some of our favourite waiata produced from whānau within Te Whānau Tupu Ngātahi o Aotearoa and also some other musicians who love to share their love of music.

The playcentreshop maori-music-movement collection is where you can purchase pukapuka that have some catchy waiata included in them, plus some poi and rākau.

The famous Ngā Waiata o te Taniwha from the Hātaitai Playcentre CD is also available as a digital download on playcentre/media, and you can play snippets of waiata and get a copy of all the lyrics too.

Ngā Korokoro Tūī was produced by Birkenhead Playcentre in 2020 featuring a waiata written especially for Playcentre by Māmā Mate and Pāpā Sep Taitua from Te Upoko o Te Ika, Wellington.  The title comes from a whakataukī  ‘Me he korokoro tūī’ – like the throat of tūī, referring to those people who have beautiful melodious singing voices!

Multi-talented Jean Yern composed poi atu rā with the music for you to learn the tune, so get out your poi, spin and twirl in time to the rhythm.

You can read the background information and learn the moteatea written by Whaea Kararaina Ferris especially for Te Whānau Tupu Ngātahi.

Sharon Holt has written 30 pukapuka, each one comes with a waiata, an easy way to learn some kupuhou/new words and rerenga kōrero/sentences.  You can watch videos, listen to free music, and learn sign language. Te Reo Singalong | Learn Māori Through Stories & Song

Sisters Siu Williams-Lemi and Leah Williams-Partington are known for their reorua and bilingual Māori and Pasifika waiata and their harmonious voices – “me he korokoro tūī” Loopy Tunes Preschool Music.  They offer music sessions, performances, pukapuka, music including ‘Matariki Waiata’. ‘Pasifika Beatz’ and the ‘Rainbow Collection’.

takai.find-resources/activities/action-song/ Tākai is a great resource for finding all sorts of waiata and activites related to tamariki in Playcentre. At the end of each activity is a list of kupuhou that you can learn.

From the Ki te hoe Indigenising Practise we have the rauemi  Wā Whāriki Mat Time with some rerenga kōrero to extend sentences you may already know  “Titiro mai, whakarongo mai, ka pānutia e au te Pukapuka ināianei.”  “Look, listen children I will read the book now.” https://ako.ac.nz/knowledge-centre/ki-te-hoe-indigenising-practice/resource-set-te-reo-maori-rerenga-korero-and-waiata/
